South Granville FFA Cookout

After our weekly meeting at the state FFA office, I headed on over to South Granville High School’s annual cookout. It was held at beautiful Sanding Beach Falls Lake Recreation Center, and I arrived right in the middle of an intense game of tug-of-war. Now this is no exaggeration; they had a tug of war rope that was not only meant to be pulled back and forth with two ends, but had four sides! Needless to say I was impressed!
After some fun, we sat down to a wonderful dinner. Now we’ve been told as officers that we will be tired of BBQ by the end of our officer year because one thing we NC FFA members have in common is our love of good food, but I have to say South Granville set the bar high for some great BBQ.
To end the meeting, the chapter officers led group activities after I gave my remarks. From toilet paper mummies to a game of Ninja, they’re games got everyone laughing and working together. I have no doubt that this chapter will have an amazing year after this great start!

The Day We Were...ELECTED!

I've never felt the way I did on Thursday morning. I woke up and got ready, put my official dress on and zipped up my jacket with pride, knowing this may be one of the lasts times it is worn. I got to the convention center and sat with the rest of the delegates as we sat through the delegate reports. The next few hours were mostly a big blur. I remember some of the awards that were announced and seeing Daniel Alvey do a little dance. However I distinctly remember the retiring words of President Justin McEntrye. I was sitting back stage, the nerves had desperately hit and watching him, eased everything. His words were inspiring, heartfelt, and fun. His RA ended and I remember walking behind stage and over to where the State officer delegates would sit to hear who the next six officers would be. I didnt even know it was next on the list, it hit me fast, like a bullet. Everyone started standing up and I followed, knees  shaking, butterflies the size of boulders in my stomach. I was standing up beside Cary Jean as the Pirates of the Carribean theme song started playing. The knots in my stomach were bigger then any boulder I had ever faced. I thought I was going to pass out, or have a heart attack. The anxiety was intense. Katie was called first, we cheered with excitement, I got anxious praying my name would be called. Beverly was next, my stomach dropped. Alyssa Ramsey from Madison, I was about to throw up. Hannah Russell, it was obvious this was going to be a very girl dominate team, but would I be one of those? I knew the next name was either going to be mine, or it wasnt, I was desperately praying it was mine. Katie Stamey started out, "The vice president at the vice president station...from the Rosewood FFA Chapter!" I don't even remember hearing my name. All I remember is Daviel Alvey grabbing me and we ran up the stairs. I almost slipped as I embraced what would go on to be some of my best friends and amazing teammates. We awaited for our President to be called, we all looked upon the other candidates in wonder, and "lastly from the Knightdale FFA chapter.. John Stewart!" We embraced him and we all hugged, crying, laughing, gasping, so excited, shocked, and honored. I was so overwhelmed it was hard to breathe. That moment we had dreamed about for so long, had finally came, this was it. Standing on that stage was the most amazing feeling any of us have ever felt. It was everything we had ever wanted.

We watched the rest of the officers finish and retire, and we were still in shock as we performed closing ceremonies. Was this real? Pinch Me. After closing ceremonies we united with our chapters, our friends, our family, everyone that had supported us. We finished saying our goodbyes and then we cleaned up the convention center and headed back to the office. We walked in and our names were already up on the board in front of the office, what a feeling that was. It was there that we had the best meal ever, a happy meal from McDonalds. Okay, maybe thats an exaggeration, but at the time, everything was amazing to us. We finished that up and then we talked about what the year would hold, and what would be expected of us. Later that night we went to dinner at the Capitol City Club in downtown Raleigh, with State Staff, Regional Coordinators and their families. We also got to visit with representatives from Farm Bureau who sponsored our meal. It was a wonderful night of laughter and good conversation, but the best moment was when the sun started to fade. You could see the whole city from the top, it was beautiful. In that moment we could not have been happier. We went back to the hotel, it had been an overwhelming day. We all went to sleep with our jackets visible, so when we woke up the next morning we could see it wasnt just a dream, it was now our reality. We have one year to serve the 18,335 + North Carolina FFA members, and we can't wait.

Chapter Visit - Central Cabarrus

A visit to my home county...who could object to that?! After class I headed west so that I could attend the first meeting of the year for Central Cabarrus High School. The wonderful officer team greeted me in full official dress, and then completed their opening ceremony.
After the officers got the meeting started off right, I took over for a little while in order to discuss what FFA truly is and some opportunities that each and every student has within this organization. I was so excited to hear what things interested those students, and what things they considered to be their biggest skills. Each activity that they do or skill that they have can be linked to being an FFA member in some way. Whether it was fishing and hunting, which can apply to hunter’s safety and envirothon, or speaking skills, which could lead them to compete in public speaking CDEs, they did it all!
After finishing my part of the meeting up with an “oreo clap” as requested by Sarah and Ally, we mingled and got to know each other over ice cream. This was most definitely an awesome visit!

County Commissioners Forum

After spending much time with FFA members and fellow state officers all summer, it was time to put some of knowledge and experiences into action. Hannah, Caroline, Beverly, and I had the pleasure of spending a few hours with county commissioners from across our state, while attending the annual 4H Youth Summit.
Our time with commissioners began at the Horn Of Plenty Banquet, held at the Cabarrus Arena. There, we were able to mingle with commissioners from our specific counties over an amazing meal of locally grown foods. Discussion revolved around our time spent as state officers so far, what events we could participate in throughout the upcoming year, and general interests of things in our home county.
The next day, we were able to have breakfast and attend workshops alongside our commissioners and 4H members. Being from the best county ever, Cabarrus, I decided to attend the workshop on locally grown food and it’s positive effects on Cabarrus County’s economy.
Overall, we learned a great deal and had an awesome time socializing with our local policy makers!

State Leadership Conference Week 1

It all came down to this.We had our training, two long weeks worth, and it was time to apply it. On a very, very long van ride home with Mr. Davis at the wheel and John as co-pilot, our discussion constantly went back to us saying “I just can’t wait to be with the members.” Now maybe this was because we had been in hotels stuck with only state officers for the past few days; though this is a possibility, I think that it had more to do with the fact that we were elected because of the members and our love for them.   Members, here we came.
Week one of SLC began with we officers meeting on a Sunday afternoon to begin the preparation. From practicing opening ceremony, to practicing flag raising, to preparing workshops, we wanted nothing more than for it to be just right. It had been a year since we had seen the beautiful White Lake FFA Camp, with its lovely blazing hot temperatures, and we were infinitely excited. Every one of us had memories there that we had made with past state officers, and now it was our turn to have that kind of an impact on our members.
IMPACT. It’s a simple concept that means so much. This was our theme for the week, and we knew that every single individual could make an impact, whether in themselves, their chapter, or in their community no matter how small the deed.
This all started with our small group meetings that Monday night. I have to give a shout out to the wonderful members from Hobbton, who made one heck of a great small group! This time spent with members is one that we officers hold dear to our hearts because it was the first time we really spent one on one time with any members as an officer. Lets just say the impact that members had on us merely began there.
In our workshops, those possibilities that members had to make an impact were discussed through topics like Advocacy, Fundraising, and ........ Now this was the first time that we as officers had presented workshops on this scale, as well as the first time we had we had ever worked together. Anticipation doesn’t begin to describe how we felt! However, the nerves left as soon as we began to see the smiling familiar faces of the members entering the room. We knew that the one thing that mattered the most for that week was that everyone had fun and learned a little something along the way.
Some things were more fun to learn than others...things like the fact that we don’t give out our numbers in movie theaters, that Michael Jackson and Elvis just can’t get along, and where we ladies as some crazy potential dates would put a wedge of cheese. That’s right, I’m talking about Wednesday Night Live! Amidst the workshop preparation and hanging out with awesome members, we officers were devoted to being sure that we would make some members laugh come Wednesday night. I’d say we were pretty successful!
From making members laugh to creating a serious moment, we did it all that week. Thursday night for vespers, we chose to reflect as a group on “impact.” Each of us chose a story that personally touched us based on the impact others had made. For example, I was moved by the influence FFA members across the nation had on hurricane Katrina victims by starting the Seeds of Hope Campaign.
It was a beautiful night on the lake, and every member and advisor sat silent at the end of the pier as we officers proceeded in one by one holding candles. As if we had done it a million times before, we said the vespers that we had prepared with a deep emotion that we all felt. We said one by one “You can make an impact,” and blew out the candles. A chill ran down my spine as we said in unison, “We can make an impact.”
As we fell backwards and let the warm water take us in, all I could think was that WE were now a team. WE were now a family. And WE had made an impact in the amazing members that we had the privilege of being with all week.
When I opened my eyes, the first thing I saw was the beaming faces of my teammates as we all grabbed each other for a hug. There was no place we would rather be in that moment. We then turned and watched the people that meant so much to us exit the pier. Those individuals that we had spent just one week with had impacted us in a way that is simply indescribable.
Our first week with the members is one that we will NEVER forget!

Agribusinnes Forum and Dinner

We were lucky to be invited to North Carolina’s annual Agribusiness Dinner in August. Not only did we get to hang out with the awesome state 4H officers during this event we were able to mingle with some of North Carolina’s biggest political advocates in the agricultural field including Senator Richard Burr, several house representatives and of course Commissioner Steve Troxler! Also there were several representatives of agricultural companies and organizations in North Carolina. The Agribusiness Dinner was held in conjunction with the annual NC Agribusiness Council's Ag Leaders Conference and Commissioner Troxler’s 7th annual Food Safety Forum. This was a great time to represent FFA and spread our agricultural love to those who support us!

BLAST OFF Traning

Two Days after convention the officer team and myself got right down to business with BLAST OFF training. BLAST OFF or Building Leaders and Strong Teams of Officers is one of the amazing trainings programs that we participate in to help prepare us for an successful year. We learned all about our personal goals and missions, responsibilities and so much more! Our BLAST OFF training was held at the office in Raleigh and we were blessed to have an amazing presenter, Amy from Ohio. Actually, before Amy came to the beautiful state of North Carolina she had just been to Pennsylvania and her next stop was Florida to do even more state officer training. We got to share alot with Amy including so good BBQ, Sweet Tea, her first hushpuppy and thanks to Alyica, Amy has some good ol North Carolina Watermelon!  BLAST OFF was an awesome time for us to bond and better learn about each other. We even began our own going team fued, which is better; eastern or western North Carolina BBQ!
